This print continues to explore my fascination with wave forms, using a three dimensional hyperbolic wave form to bring structure the image. I first used this form in my Mokuhanga print ‘Rising Moon Rising Sea‘. The use of cobalt blue ink gives the print a lovely brilliance and sparkle – like the breaking waves of the sea.
This is my first reduction wood engraving, gradually engraving away and removing wood that I don’t wanted printed on the next layer. I engraved and then printed the image five times, each layer is printed with cobalt blue ink, initially starting with a greater proportion of opaque white ink and the final layer being neat cobalt blue. I chose to use this technique as I wanted to build up the tones by exposing the printed paper surface (and therefore the previously printed colour) after engraving each layer. It is important to get the registration accurate so the image is built up with each layer overlaying the previous.
