Current News (updated 16 May 2022)

I will be at Winchester Print Fair on 21 May 2022 at the Nutshell, King’s Walk, Winchester from 10.30 am to 4 pm! This is a first time for this event which has been organised by printmakers Katherine Anteney and John Bloor. I’m feeling very excited to be amongst them and such big names including Robin MacKenzie, Jonny Hannah, Rebecca Drury and Kate Watkins, as well as fellow Cowprint Members Margot Eardley and Sian Appleyard. Altogether 14 printmakers plus the Bognor Regis based printmaking supply shop Handprinted will be there and promises to be a really great day with so many different styles and techniques on show.

I’m really thrilled to hear that my wood engraving ‘Wren’ has been selected for the exhibition ‘Nature Prints and Poetry’ at the Scottish Ornitholigists’ Club at Aberlady, near Edinburgh from 8 June to 31 July 2022. The print will be displayed alongside the poem of the same name that inspired it, by Scottish poet Richard Price. For more detail see here. This print is on show at ‘Cutting a Fine Line – The Art of Printmaking’ – for details see below.

Another success: my wood engraving ‘Fawley’ has been selected from the St Barbe Open in Lymington which runs from 30 April to 11 June 2022. This print was on show at the Titchfield Art and Craft Show 2022 – for details see below.

I have been busy preparing for a number of exhibitions and events this spring (including a couple of Opens where the successful submissions have yet to be announced – more details to follow):

  • Cutting a Fine Line – The Art of Printmaking, a 10 year retrospective of printmaking by Cowprint Artists’ Group at God’s House Tower, Southampton from 29 April to 8 May 2022. Cowprint is the artist printmakers group that I currently chair. I have submitted two recent wood engravings ‘Wren’ and ‘Solent Seashells’.
  • Titchfield Arts and Crafts Show 2022 at Titchfield Community Centre, Hampshire from 22 to 24 April 2022. My wood engraving ’Fawley (across Southampton Water)’ was Commended in the first time exhibitor category. I also sold one of these prints and one of my Solent Seashells wood engravings.
  • Winchester Print Fair on 21 May 2022 at the Nutshell, King’s Walk, Winchester. I’ve been invited to sell my work at this exciting new event organised by printmakers Katherine Anteney and John Bloor.

In August 2021 I was really excited to hear that my submission of Fawley Blue Sky had been accepted for the Print International Exhibition 2021 at Tŷ Pawb, the regional arts centre in Wrexham, North Wales. The exhibition ran from 4 December 2021 to 26 February 2022. I was hoping to visit before Christmas but a rise in covid cases put the trip off until February – and I’m so pleased to have visited as there was an excellent display of very high quality prints!

Print International 2021 includes 139 pieces of artwork by artists from 10 countries including Germany, America, France, Australia, Canada, Russia, Poland, Spain – and Wales of course! This followed a tremendous response to their open call with over four hundred artworks submitted. Amongst this exhibition there is also artwork featured by artists, practitioners and educators from the Regional Print Centre to celebrate its 20th Anniversary.

My print was hung below one by artist printmaker Jacqui Dodds of the Shard in London. Interestingly although my print is nearly A4 in size it looks surprisingly small when compared with some of the others in the exhibition. May be a hint I need to try some bigger prints!

2 August 2021

Cowprint, the artists printmaker group I’m a member of, at last put on our exhibition ‘Navigating a New World’, a collaboration with Inky Hands Studio in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA, to commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower over 400 years ago, at the exciting new arts and heritage venue God’s House Tower in Southampton. Delayed a year because of the Covid pandemic it was such a relief to see this finally open! Open Friday to Sunday until 15th August 2021. My print ‘ Downwind off Cape Cod’ is on show along with 21 other artists from Cowprint and 18 from Inky Hands, as well as two artists concertina books of prints made by each workshop.

I’m also exhibiting ‘Hamble Quay’ and ‘Fawley Blue Sky’ in the Summer Exhibition Open 2 at the Yellow Edge Gallery, in Gosport from 31 July to 15th August 2021. This is a first time at this gallery so looking forward to it!

June 2021

The Red Hot Press Printmakers Exhibition 2021 at Hilliers Arboretum, near Romsey, was a great success with the groups biggest sales to date. This was my first exhibition post lockdown and I was showing work along side 22 other artists and such great variety of techniques and subject matter of excellent quality to see. I showed my series of Fawley Power Station prints along with some other recent prints including ‘Hamble Quay’ and ‘Blackbird in the Magnolia Tree’.

My print ‘Hamble Quay’ will be on sale at St Barbe Museum + Art Gallery in Lymington during the Open Exhibition (see below) and the shop is now stocking a selection of my cards including ‘Hamble Quay’.

April 2021

I have been awarded Highly Commended in the St Barbe Open Exhibition 2021, Lymington for my reduction linocut print ‘Hamble Quay‘. There were over 400 entries for this prestigious regional art exhibition of which only 87 were selected so its great to be a part of this annual event. I was also awarded Highly Commended last year for my etching ‘Storm over Fawley‘. The exhibition runs from 17 May to 12 June 2021.

December 2020

KayBrownArt is the name of my Etsy shop launched in 2020 where you can buy a selection of my prints and cards. If you are local to Hamble why not pop in to Sea Sky, an art gallery and gift shop where I am one of their featured artists. They are continuing to stock a selection of prints, framed and unframed, and greeting cards. It’s great to be supporting a local independent shop in the village where I live, particularly as it has such a wide range of gifts on offer and some really excellent artists work.

God’s House Tower launched their online exhibition ‘Navigating a New World’ in December 2020 which features my print ‘Downwind off Cape Cod’ and a selection of others from Cowprint Artists’ Group. My print and cards are available to buy from their online shop. We hope to hold our exhibition at GHT later in 2021. My latest post describes how I created this print.

August 2020

Southampton City Art Gallery have selected two of my prints for their new online open exhibition – In Search of a New World which marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. I’m really thrilled as this is the first time I have entered the Open and to have both ‘Downwind off Cape Cod’ and ‘The Crossing’ selected out of over 450 entries is great news! The exhibition launched on the 15 August 2020, exactly 400 years since the Mayflower departed from Southampton and is still available online.

I completed the Diploma in Printmaking at the Red Hot Press in March 2020, but unfortunately the Foundation and Diploma show that was to be held in May had to be cancelled. I am now building on the body of work developed during the course which focused on celebrating the fine brutalist architecture of Fawley Power Station, so expect to see more prints on this theme emerging over the next few months

The John Hansard Gallery Shop, Guildhall Square, Southampton is currently temporarily closed. I am hoping to continue providing stock of my work for sale when they reopen.
