On a glorious summers day in 2019 we sailed into Falmouth harbour to be greeted with the magnificent sight of the Falmouth working boats racing off St Mawes. We followed them closely, watching them work their way slowly upstream – so elegant with their gaff rigs and colourful topsails!

These boats, which range from 7 to 10 m long, were initially designed for dredging oysters in the late 19th century, but as fishing stocks dwindled and motorised fishing boats were introduced they fell into disrepair and many were left to rot. Some were kept and raced and soon interest grew in building replica ones using the modern boat materials. Over recent years a strong racing fleet has developed and makes for exciting viewing in windy conditions.
