A wood engraving on lemonwood printed with Hawthorns Stay Open Dense Black Ink on 210 gsm Zerkall printing paper.
Having printed this wood engraving for my submission to Hot Bed Press’s 20:20 Print Exchange 2021 in an ultramarine blue ink I decided to do a small edition in traditional black ink and name it in Latin after the opium poppy, grown extensively in the Hindu Kush and other regions of Afghanistan. The flowers petals actually vary widely in colour from white to a beautiful ruby red and carmine pink colour. The black colour is somehow more poignant given the devastation to human lives caused by opium addiction.
