This traditional Japanese water based wood block print was created with five blocks, four colours, nori (rice starch paste) and 9 passes of pigment.
I spend many hours watching the movement of the sea when I’m sailing and find the overlapping of different wave patterns particularly fascinating. This print explores wave forms using a three dimensional hyperbolic wave form, reduced on each block allowing the use of a different coloured pigment to create an abstract image of a rising sea with cresting waves under a rising moon. I have cut the blocks with a fine V tool Sankakuto to indicate the breaking waves and broken reflections of the moon as the waves rise and fall.
