I am absolutely delighted that this print has been selected for the 2024 Juried International Mokuhanga Exhibition in Echizen City, Japan. Entitled Inheritance & Innovation: Mokuhanga & Washi the exhibition will run from 4th to 8th April 2024 concurrently with the fifth 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen. I am also thrilled to have my application accepted to study this technique on the MI-LAB Artist in Residence programme with the Japanese Mokuhanga masters in Echizen later in 2024.
This follows the success earlier in 2023 to be awarded the Mary and John Symons Memorial Award for best print for this print at St Barbe’s Open Exhibition 2023, in Lymington, Hampshire.
This traditional Japanese water based wood block print was created with four blocks, four colours, sumi ink, nori (rice starch paste) and 20 passes of pigment. This print uses the ‘bokashi’ technique for the graduation of colour intensity with several passes of pigment.
On a windless evening Hamstead Quay is a beautiful and magical place, with only the sound of the oyster catchers and Brent geese for company, and the slumbering backdrop of the Downs beyond. Hamstead Quay is in Newtown Creek, a National Trust nature reserve on the Isle of Wight.
This print is dedicated to Sian, a fellow printmaker and friend, who inspired me with her constant strive for perfection in her printmaking. Peace be with you Sian.
